Draw 1-1 in Women’s World Cup Rematch
The match was refereed by Stéphanie Frappart of France, who became the first woman to referee a FIFA Women’s World Cup match.
On July 27, 2023, the USA and the Netherlands played to a 1-1 draw in a competitive match at the FIFA Women’s World Cup. The game was a replay of the USA‘s 2-0 victory in the 2019 Women’s World Cup final.
Both teams had opportunities to win the game, but neither one was able to make the final play. Both teams now have four points in Group E after the draw. On August 1, the United States will face Portugal, and the Netherlands will play Vietnam. The top two teams from each group advance to the tournament’s knockout round.
The USA controlled possession for the majority of the game, but they had trouble creating clear-cut opportunities. In the first half, they had a few acceptable chances, but they failed to take advantage of them.
The USA had its greatest opportunity of the game in the 20th minute when Sophia Smith got past the Dutch defence and had a one-on-one with the custodian, but she was stopped by a strong save.
The Netherlands were dangerous on the counter-attack in the first half. They created a few good chances, but they were unable to finish them off.
The Netherlands’ best chance of the match came in the 23rd minute when Jill Roord scored the opening goal. Roord latched onto a through ball and fired a low shot past the USA goalkeeper.
Through Lindsey Horan, the USA scored an equaliser in the 62nd minute. Horan responded to a corner with a strong header that got past the Dutch goalie.
The USA had a few more opportunities to win the game, but they couldn’t make the winning move. The Netherlands also had a couple scoring opportunities, but they came up empty-handed.
The result of a draw was just. Both teams had opportunities to win the game, but neither one was able to make the final play.
